A good convention to attend would be the(PAX)Penny Arcade Expo. This is an oppurtunity to fully immerse yourself in the gamer culture and make good contacts within the game industry.

A Great Book
A great book to read on how to break into the game industry and to know what to expect on your journey into it is Paid to Play.
This book has sample resumes, job descriptions, and advice on how to make contacts in the game industry. It also has a few success and horror stories on the subject. All in all a terrific read.
