Where's my SafeCar?
Questions - ForesightDevelopment@UAT-CourseWikiWhy can't we buy any cars today that look like a stealth fighter, low to the ground, with sharply angled sides that will push any vehicle that hits them either over or under them? Wouldn't such cars prevent the paralyzing of their occupants when bad, intoxicated, uninsured or otherwise unlucky drivers smash into them at high speeds? Driving is probably the most dangerous thing the average person does every day. Every year 42,000 Americans die on the highways, and roughly a million (one in 300 of us) are injured. 17,000 of these deaths are alcohol related. 10,000 of these are intersection related. Red light running alone causes 800 deaths and 180,000 injuries every year, everything from sprains to total paralysis (see US Crash and Casualty Stats, DriveandStayAlive.com). The US Department of Transportation estimates the typical driver will have a near automobile accident one to two times per month and will be in a collision of some type on average every 6 years. Cars that drive themselves are probably 40 years (two generations) away. Meanwhile, isn't it about time Americans had a safe automobile solution available to them? Hummers aren't especially safe, and they use way more gas than this wind-efficient vehicle would. Cars like this could have been built back in the '50's. It's frickin' 2007 already. Why are we still living in the Medieval Period in auto safety?
